Guess what is this?
Yes, it's TARAP. It's a native fruit to Borneo. I recall when I was a tourist guide, a tourist from west Malaysia called it TERAP , well since its native to Borneo, we call it then what it should be. TARAP, Not TERAP not TAREP. It's TARAP... Pronounce TA as in tar and RAP as in RUB. Got it.
Scientifically it's a species of Artocarpus Odoratissimus. Basically a under the bread fruit family.
To those that hate durian, tarap smells better, so usually it is acceptable to most people, the skin is soft with blunt spike.. Sometimes it feels like your rubbing on a guy head with very very short hair cut. LOL
It's not huge, it's the size of a rugby. Some can go a little bit bigger than a rugby.
TARAP is usually found relatively cheap especially during the fruiting season toward year end, as early as mid October onward.
It's doesn't look like much, but once you have it your mouth , some say its heaven. Honestly, perhaps that a bit too much... I guess only I said that, cause it is heaven for me.
No one can hide TARAP from me. I can smell it from 100 miles away. You see, I grew up with a TARAP tree behind our family home in Labuan. We would climb the huge tree and pluck it before it fell, cause if it is ripe, and fall, that it. Plus I was always in competition with the monkey , they love tarap too.
When it is ripe. It is easy to pull the skin apart, and the first thing that happen is the glorious smell and the heavenly white, creamy , juicy flesh that is yabadabadooo...
Once you start eating, dude your screwed... You can't stop.
I know this is a heavenly fruit cause it's just too damn Good, but sometimes I am not sure, did the devil made this fruit cause most time when I start eating this, I just don't want to share... You will momentarily forget you got family and friend... It's just you and TARAP againts the world. LOL
Here is a video how awesome TARAP is.
