Amongst those who own their homes outright, the Conservatives actually extended their lead. Here is the graphic by pollster Opinium:
How many people own their homes outright?
The latest figures show 37% own outright, 26% own with a mortgage, and the rest rent.
Those who own outright are not only unaffected by interest rate rises, they're getting interest on their savings for the first time in fifteen years.
The hope for the Conservatives is that the own outright group rises rapidly. That people with less than five years left on their mortgage cash in their ISA, stocks, or other savings, and pay the mortgage off now, rather than taking out another 2-year or 5-year fixed rate mortgage at higher rates.
If the number of households who own outright reaches 40% by the next election and inflation comes down, the Conservatives have a chance of pulling off an unexpected victory.
