The 3D version of the chips are shall we say, incredible. The extra cache on chip which is something the zen architecture naturally LOVES lots of, substantially improves execution of code without rampantly having to fetch from ram.
Currently the BEST gaming chip on the market, is the 5800x3D because of this. Even with it's lower clocks compared to the normal 5800x... it still greatly surpasses it in numerous things but the most universal of conditions is the majority of games, some more so, some so significantly it's literally double the performance.
While the maximum frame rate or averages may not necessarily be beating for example the 5800x vanilla chip, or the 12900k or whatever, what is CRITICAL to gameplay is the frame times and latency as well as the MINIMUM frame rates.
Average frame rates as a performance metric is fucking stupid... seriously "but how else are we to know"... same reasons mearuing the MAXIMUM frame rate of a game is equally dumb as hell. Minimums the 1% and .1% for example are pretty straight forward, the critical measurements are most certainly the frame times and such.
The 3D definitely is king. And if you even think about VR at all, it's a must have. there. I've a few friends with 12900KS that dumped it in favor of the 5800x3D once they saw it in action for VR. It's a no brainer.
