The Glock 17 is a polymer-framed, short recoil operated, locked breech semi-automatic pistols designed and produced by Glock Ges.m.b.H., a weapons manufacturer headquartered in in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria. It was accepted in Austrian military and police service by 1982. It came with a standard magazine capacity of 17 9mm rounds.
Despite concerns from the gun-buying market to accept a "plastic gun" due to supposed durability and reliability issues, and fears that the pistol would become undetected by metal detectors of security checks in airports, Glock pistols have become the company's most profitable products, commanding 65% of the market share of handguns for U.S. law enforcement agencies as well as supplying many countries' armed forces and security agencies worldwide. Glocks are also popular handguns among civilians for recreational shooting, sporting, self defense and for concealment or open carry.
