Communication between vehicles can be very useful for enhancing driver safety and navigation. Volkswagen will give you a taste of the future technology as early as 2019. Volkswagen Company announced this week that it will enable vehicle-to-x communication on its cars starting in 2019. These vehicles will include the IEEE 802.11p (pWLAN) wireless standard, which was established for direct communication between cars and infrastructure around the world.
This technology will enable cars to communicate with infrastructure and other cars at distances up to 500 meters. These communications do not need connection to the internet, so owners need not worry about subscribing to data plans. The Audi A4 is already equipped with this technology and it can communicate with spotlights in Las Vegas; it can warn the driver when the light is about to turn green.
