Biomimicry in Drones

We are beginning to see the future of autonomous technology. Reconnaissance via drones, changing tactics, and evolving designs for efficiency advantages. Nature is the master of engineering and where our best ideas are yet to come from thanks to millions of years of evolution. The concept of looking at the bioenvironment around us to design own creations is often called biomimicry and what I think will heavily affect the future of aviation.

Swarm technology involves fleets of autonomous drones are an emerging technology that will be heavily relied upon in the future. Swarms allow for individual targeting of vital components such as an aircraft’s engine or weapon systems. A drone fitted with a small packet of C4 could accurately disable these systems at a low cost


the US defence force are researching the hunting strategies of killer whales and wolf packs, observing their tactics to learn how we can mimic similar strategies. Swarming technology also allows for a defensive advantage. Large swarms decrease the accuracy of targeting systems, like the way a school of fish can collectively confuse a shark through the power of its “hive mind”.

Taking ideas of animals also allows for many benefits in the field of aviation. We can focus our study on natures stealthiest predators.

This allows us to create stealthy designs while maintaining perfect aerodynamics. As you can see our best designs are plagiarised straight from nature.

As time passes we are engineering more autonomous drones that fit seamlessly into the environment. With modern day developing technology we can transform an organism’s brain into an AI code that can be programmed into our drones for the most realistic effect. To give you an idea, these are some organism with a low enough number of neurons in there brain that we can fully simulate them on an office computer.
Super computers will have no trouble coordinating larger swarms.With realistic autonomous arial veichles we will gain the power of complete battlefeild awareness through air to ground terrain mapping and virtually undetected surveilance.

The future of aviation will disguise itself in the nature it learns from. Reaping the rewards of autonomy, stealth, efficiency and effectiveness
