Wireless power can feed all electrical devices through the air, but existing wireless charging requires near-contact distance with the electronic device, such as smart phones. But powering up a phone might become as easy as connecting to a WiFi hotspot.
Quasistatic cavity resonance (QSCR) is a new wireless power transmission technology that generates quasistatic magnetic fields to safely deliver power to mobile receivers within the range of the field. This was developed by Disney Research (not the other Disney).
A 16x16 room was designed for this experiment, which can deliver power to receivers with 40% to 95% efficiency. This can send 1.9 kW of power under federal safety guidelines, which is equivalent to charging 320 smart phones. All of the devices in the above picture where being wirelessly powered!
This works by inducing electrical currents and to the walls, floor and ceiling that all have an aluminum frame within them. A copper pole is placed in the center. This generates a uniform magnetic field that encompasses the whole room.
Receiving coils receive the transmitted energy by operating at the same resonance frequency of the magnetic field. Discrete capacitors are placed inside the copper pole and used to isolate harmful electric fields. These capacitors control the electromagnetic frequency and confine the fields.
Imagine current and new possible applications for electronics and robotics where you don't need batteries, with both the data and power transmission being done wirelessly. Right now this doesn't seem feasible since this is a specially constructed room, but the researchers say it's likely possible to reduce the need for metallized walls, ceilings and floors in future developments. Conductive paint might even be an option.
The low megahertz frequency don't interact with everyday materials so other objects and people shouldn't be affected, just like WiFi. Objects don't suffer from eddy current heating simply by being around the field.
I know that some people are affected by electromagnetic frequencies more than others, for some reason they have a sensitivity. I wonder if this wireless energy will have similar consequences for some people. Wireless transmission of energy for data communication something recent in human use, and I wonder about the long-term effects this has on the human organism by having all of these energy waves affecting us.
