The real issue is the fact ~1700 audio recording were made and stored by a 'smart' home IoT device. Do customers really understand that these class of devices, not just this vendor, will be capturing and storing their home conversations, queries, telemetry, etc.?
In aggregate, such data is enough to quickly and definitively identify owners and understand very personal activities, viewpoints, relationships, location, influence areas, and value structures. These devices may be 'smarter' than those who are using them.
Data, not limited to voice, is continuously collected and perpetually stored. I have seen estimates that 38 million smart speakers will be sold in the U.S. and 56 million worldwide in 2018 (source: Statista.com).
That is a lot of data being collected, organized, analyzed, and correlated.
How much do you trust that such personal data won't be abused, exposed, stolen, sold, aggregated with other databases, or used in unexpected ways that you might not approve of?
