There are two ways to block ads in Google Chrome, rule-based and using the webRequest API. Ad Block Plus uses rules which isn't as efficient as the webRequest API that uBlock Origin uses.
While both of these methods are effective, the webRequest API prevents HTTP requests to unwanted urls from executing. This is the preferred way of blocking ads and is why uBlock Origin is so effective.
In the past, Google has warned the webRequest API is going to go away and will force all Ad Blocking plugins to use rule-based technology. This would limit Ad Blocking to 30,000 rules which are far less than required to effectively block ads. In fact, it isn't even remotely close to enough rules to handle popular ad and privacy rule lists.
Google is an ads company, so while this change is no surprise it will have a huge negative impact on the user experience of Google Chrome users. Many users on Reddit have already pledged to abandon Chrome in favor of other browsers (most notably Brave).
While Google claims this change is not set in stone it is highly likely to happen. I have been using uBlock Origin for a long time and I couldn't imagine using the web without it.
I will likely start using Pi-Hole again and see if I can get it to effectively block YouTube ads. Pi-Hole is an open source project that runs on a Raspberry Pi and blocks ads on your entire network and not just on one computer. This will prevent ads on mobile phones and even in mobile games. It works amazingly well but I never got it to block YouTube ads which I find the most obnoxious of them all.
