While ago I read here that our attention span is less than a goldfish now. It is told that the goldfish has an attention span of 9 seconds. Ours has been decreasing to 8 since 2000 when the mobile phones became popular. Recently, smartphones are making the situation even worse. We go from one post to another on social media and can’t concentrate on long posts while we are spendging a lot of time on our phones. I noticed that when I decided to track my online activity using an app on my cell phone. I installed Moment to see how many hours my screen is "On" during the day. I also checked the battery part from my iPhone’s settings to see which app is the one that I spend the most hours on during a week.
Here is the result:
I must confess that the result was more than what I predicted. It is mentioned below the upper graph that the average Moment user spends almost 4 hours on their phone every day. I also checked the same thing with my other millennial friends and the results were like the same. However, for example, my Chinese friend spends the same time on WeChat instead of Telegram or WhatsApp. So, the apps might differ based on our interests or the places we live but the sad news is that we are all spending(better to say “wasting”) so much time on these little captivating digital screens.
The first and most important step to decrease these numbers is to accept the fact that you are spending more than enough time on your smartphone. While you are tracking your activity I will be writing another post in the coming days which gives you some solutions to overcome this problem.
