To no one’s surprise, Amazon has a semi-secret hardware research and development division. It’s called Lab126, and if that isn’t upsetting enough, they are working on building a home robot.
That’s right, an Amazon-made domestic android is coming, some say as early as 2019, and its arrival will mark the beginning of a new dawn of mankind. Or it’s end, depending on the breaks.

The project is codenamed “Vesta”, and the idea is to create a sort of mobile Echo device, something that will follow you around your home like a butler, waiting to perform some useful task. Details are hard to come by at the moment, but the initial versions of Vesta will probably be limited in what functions they can perform. It’s hard to imagine a robot-servant capable of tending to the household chores being affordable to anyone but Jeff Bezos himself. That, however, will likely change in time.
For now it seems Vesta will be a glorified Roomba that can have a nice chat about the weather. It will also, of course, be able to eavesdrop on your conversations in every room, following you about from place to place, never giving you a moment of peace or privacy. It will learn your likes and dislikes, your habits, your vices, your sins and your deepest darkest fears, using this understanding against you, turning you into a product-buying, service-reliant flesh-servant beholden to your own true masters at Amazon.
But don’t worry about the spilled soda…Vesta’s got that. You just keep clicking that “buy now” button.
