The building of the Kecskemét National Theater was completed in October 1895. On November 11, 1916, the theater took the name of József Katona, a Hungarian writer born in Kecskemét. The building has an eclectic style with neo-baroque ornaments, largely the work of the Austrian sculptor Henrik Hausbeitner. The theater has been renovated several times over time.
