Saturday morning, 20th February 2021. Around 6:00am. My wife wakes up to get Little Wookie a Milo. It's a morning routine that, during the week, I don't see as I'm already at work. At weekends, however, I'm usually the last to get up, which is nice. There was nothing different that morning except for Mrs Wookie asking if I left the door to the workshop open the night before. I hadn't even been in the workshop for two days, so my answer was, of course, no. However, here it was, with the door wide open.
I pull myself out of bed, put my dressing gown on, and go and take a look. Everything seemed fine until I looked in the cabinet that stores my laptop, which I use for designing projects. My notebook was gone.
I'm not overly worried. For starters, it's an early 2011 MacBook Pro. It needs updating, so these people have done me a favour. Then add to that, a couple of years ago, Little Wookie spilled a glass of water on the keyboard, killing it. That means the power button doesn't work. To power up the laptop, you need to remove the battery with the power supply turned on. This will allow the whole thing to start on its own. I know, right? Then, because of FileVault, once it's powered on, they need to enter a password to decrypt the hard drive. Then they need to log in with a different password.
Also, because it's a MacBook, I've got it attached to iCloud. If they connect it to the internet, it will get the wipe signal that I sent it. All in all, they just stole a brick.
But what gets me is, was it someone in passing? Because access to the workshop is off a right of way, it's not likely someone just came up from the street. They would have had to know about it. Had I left the door open? I know I had left the door unlocked, but I'm not sure if the door was open. If the door was open, then it was a crime of opportunity. If the door was closed, then someone set out to get into the workshop. They would have had to go down steps, test the door, then enter and steal the laptop.
But what interests me the most is that they didn't steal the impact driver sitting next to the cupboard, nor did they steal the battery for that driver in the cabinet. So this means they were most likely scoping the place out.
To lessen this, I replaced all our outside lights with 6500k LED light bulbs. These are the brightest we have on our market. I left them on overnight. I ensured everything was locked up as well.
The lights work so well. A little too well now. Our neighbour complained about the light entering her bedroom. The other day I freaked out. I was sleeping in Little Wookie's room because he wasn't feeling well and was sleeping with Mrs Wookie. The cat wanted out, and I woke up as a result. Then I saw the light and thought that I'd overslept and that it was 6am. I needed to bum a ride with one of our couriers who leaves at 6:30am. It was only 2:30am.
We're looking at investing in security cameras instead. Lure them in with a false sense of security but get them arrested instead. I'm down with that.
Either way, this week has been crap as a result. It's going to cost money, my wife is a little on edge, and even Little Wookie is a little unnerved. People who only think about themselves need a good kick in the balls. If I'm being honest with you.
