Fallout is one of my favorite shows of recent years. Not only do I love it, but my wife really enjoys it too which means I get to rip through the episodes faster than if I am trying to find some "me" time.
Thanks to being distracted by some other shows we watch with our daughter, it took us a while to finally finish the last episode. I didn't think it would be possible for the producers to top the first season but I honestly think they id. Season two was fantastic!
As always, I promise there will be no spoilers in this post so please don't worry if you haven't started watching yet. By the way, if you haven't started watching yet... you should start ASAP.
While many shows based on video games just think they can just roll out glorified cut scenes and fans will lap it up, Fallout actually created a prett rich story filled with mystery and fun characters. Even though the action has been tremendous, it is really the slow unraveling of the hidden plt that has been most entertaining in this show. Well that and the incredible characters.
I have loved the actor Walter Goggins since I first saw him portray Boyd Crowder on Justified. Although I am a Timothy Olyphant fan, Goggins stole every scene he was in. Because he was so entertaining I even followed him to the sitcom The Unicorn... but it just wasn't for me. But Goggins portrayal of the Ghoul/Cooper Howard is my second favorite Goggins role ever (no one can compete with Boyd). Much like Boyd Crowder, the Ghoul is an anti-hero I just can't help rooting for even when he is mercilessly killing in the wasteland. The characters actions 9and lore) really drive the show. It is truly remarkable how Goggins plays the Ghoul in a way where you can feel empathy for a post apocalyptic Zombie/Monster.
When the Ghoul is not on the screen there is plenty of fun to be had. There are quirky and interesting characters all over the wasteland. There are also opposing factions vying for control so that leads to plenty of action along the way. And some of those factions are down right hilarious while others are just creepy and horrifying. But all of them are definitely not boring.
Like everything else nowadays, the special effects are incredible. It is truly amazing how amazing even the special effects on TV shows look these days. It is a great time to be a movie or TV fan!
Even though there is a ton of action, great side characters and a story driven by The Ghoul/Cooper, the best part of the show is Lucy.
Whoever cast Ella Purnell in the role of Lucy deserves a medal. She plays the vault dweller turned wasteland explorer with the perfect blend of "ah shucks" and pure badassery. Lucy really, really, really tries to be nice and kind to others... but sometimes you just need to shoot a motherfucker in the head. And Lucy will shoot that mother fucker... begrudgingly. Lucy is funny, smart and kind. In other words, she has no place in the wasteland. But she is also determined and is on a mission for what she thinks is right. So she is going to complete her mission no matter what it takes. Even if it means befriending a Ghoul or cutting off a head or two.
It is very important to note that I never played the video games and I never feel like I am missing anything. My son has played every single game. Both he and I are able to thoroughly enjoy the show. That is very rare these days.
I can't wait for season three!
