Back at work. Actually, I never completely stopped but as summer means most of my clients are on holiday, work is drastically reduced. August is a month of chasing work until Christmas time, if not for the next year.
Chasing is not my strong suit and even though I really enjoy what I do, this part of it is not enjoyable. It is necessary though. It is rare, if not impossible to be able to do a job where all tasks are liked.
One benefit for me in this is track record, which means I don't generally have to cold-call for customers as word of mouth creates connections. I am still not great at selling myself to strangers though.
Throughout my life, relationship building has been more of a slow process of getting to know a person for the long-term, not just for the time they can offer me benefit. What is interesting I have found is I do enjoy getting to know people so even though I am not great at selling myself, getting to know them does the selling for me.
It is a much longer process that doesn't guarantee reward at the end but, it is definitely more valuable than churning and burning and working a numbers game. Sometimes it pays off financially, often not but, I am yet to get to know someone who has been valueless.
Off to work.
