If you were free to do what you want, what would you do? I am interested in such questions because it seems that for the most part, people tend to do the same things as what other people are doing and I wonder whether it is just the way we are or if we engineer ourselves to be this way. Yes, there is a very strong social aspect to our lives but does this mean we all have to think the same?
I was reading a late night post by that brought up a question that I have commonly asked and that is, how do people not have something to write about? I ask this with curiosity because it seems that a lot of people struggle to find content and I wonder if it is because they are trying to target a market segment, have a narrow view or, just don't have any opinions. Perhaps people just don't do enough or, think enough.
One of the biggest killers of thought is passive consumption of shows because no matter how great the ideas or story line is, the pace of the show means that no deep thoughts can be had and it isn't like the average person is in the habit of ruminating and reflecting upon what they watched after the show.
When I ask people "What did you think about so and so...?" they will say something like, "It was good." That isn't actually answering the question though in my opinion, where are the actual thoughts? Is thinking about things a lost art? Are we losing our cognitive abilities to consumerism?
I would say yes we are as we generally watch the same things and then mould our view of them to be similar to the group or, stay silent in rebellion. It is refreshing to get comments that actually give views and explain why those views are held. Opinions are great but they don't actually offer much value unless their is an explanation as to why they are valid, in my opinion. The reason is that if it is used as an argument, to convince me to consider it I need to be stepped along a pathway.
What do you think, or is thinking out of fashion?
