Leonid Rogozov a 27-year-old Russian doctor
Removed his own appendix after it burst because he was the only doctor stationed in a remote soviet research station in Antarctica.
It was 1961 in the newly founded Antarctic colony, Dr Rogozov began to feel ill with sever pain and classic symptoms of appendicitis. He knew that his only hope for survival was an emergency operation. But alas he was the only Dr on the base
and there was no transportation because of snowstorms. So he did it himself.
Firstly he gathered up a few men to assist him while he operated on himself.
Once he started operating he managed to stay calm and focused throughout the procedure, resting only every five minutes for a few seconds to recover from weakness and vertigo.
The procedure took him an hour and 45 minutes to complete, as the entire operation was done in mirror image.
Two weeks later the Dr was fully recovered and back on regular duty.
