We didn't learn about this in U.S. history class. Also, this "apology" didn't make our news at the time. If it did, i'm certain it was downplayed as a mere necessity at the time and was accepted.
This is equivalent to the U.S. making Iraq a territory. Why wasn't Iraq annexed after the invasion or Japan after they surrendered you ask? Because it is against International Law to do so. It is illegal to do so, as it was illegal to do the same to the sovereign Kingdom of Hawaii.
The Kingdom of Hawaii has a constitution (1840) and also had treaties with many nations- U.S. included- that announced a neutral position on any global wars. Yet, The Kingdom of Hawaii was invaded by U.S. forces that protected prominent businessmen and aided in the takeover.
Things that people accept are not always what they seem.
