The basic question is simple. What is man’s understanding of business in religion?
With the recent contentions of tithing in the cyber shere of country (Nigeria), it has become petinent that I write a post to this regard.
Daddy Freeze who is a Nigerian radio host and presenter identified tithing as a modern-day scam in a fascinating interview, I don't think Daddy Freeze is far from the truth, by stating the obvious.
"Tithing was applicable to Jews in the land Israel. When Jewish populations increased in Babylon, Moab, Ammon, and Syria, these lands also became tithe-able lands. However, tithes were unacceptable from strictly Gentile lands. So it makes no sense to tithe in Nigeria".
" The only people authorised to receive tithes were the Levites. (Hebrews 7:5). Therefore, Daddy Freeze is right: no Nigerian prophet, so-called pastor or highfalutin General Overseer is qualified to receive tithes from members of his or her congregation".
Are we to be concerned about the business of religion namely salvation of man or the use of religion for business purposes?
The General Overseer of a particular Church was asked why he turns his church affairs into a business adventure and his reply was “after all Jesus said that he had to go about his Father’s business”.
This is a rising trend of deceit in religion. With a disdained humor, the question here arises; is religion a BUSINESS in the economic sense that is, to make profit?
Pentecostal pastors are busy enriching themselves with the tithes paid by their poor members.
Finally, men of God should desist from manipulating Christians with threats of curses. Over non payment of tithe.
Men of God should rather pay more attention to the salvation man and how to save all souls from eternal damnation.
Anything less than this might reduce the church to "super markets" and "stores" where one can buy salvation with ten percent 10% of his/her salary and be guaranteed of heaven.
This post is not a critic of religion, but rather it intend to expose some deceptive practices in the name of religion and reveal the dangers it posits to true and authentic religiosity, the essence of religion.
