The monument was inaugurated in 25th october 1953 in commemoration of the 50 years in peace after the War of the Thousand Days, around to 30.000 people assisted to the ceremony by Monsignor Caicedo Téllez the bishop of Cali, but was the priest José María Arteaga who commissioned the construction of the statue, in a first place the artist Gerardo Navia Carvajal was in charge of that work but he only made a mock-up of it, so the priest attended to the italian sculptor Alideo Tazzioli Fontanini, he made a new model and with the help of his brother Adelino, an Architect and calculator, did the structural calculations; he also contributed economically to this great piece of art.
