My Canary Island Dream π΄
I've written a lot about the Canary Islands on here. That's because I've been there a lot! I've been on pretty much every island there, except one maybe. It's easily my favourite part of the world. It's got the sweet spot when it comes to climate from my point of view. Located in the Atlantic ocean, just off the coast of North Western Africa - Western Sahara/Morocco, the temperature there is always perfect. It's dry, but not as dry as the African Sahara. It's hot, but not as hot as West Africa. It's Spain, but not as Spanish as mainland Spain. It's a part of the EU, so it was easy to move to from England, until it wasn't haha.
I actually planned to move there before Brexit. I found a beautiful apartment facing the sea (not so hard on an island ) that was affordable. It would have cost me less than I pay for Council Tax alone to live there comfortably, while still having access to most things I have back in England. It almost happened, but a cascade of events rendered that dream dead forever. First it was the collapse of the tourism industry, then Brexit, then Covid, then the Bear Market, now the global downturn of everything, the Iran War, soaring oil prices making casual aviation unfordable and finally - in the imminent future - the Hantavirus.
Apparently the cruise ship at the centre of the new virus issue has finally been allowed to land on one of the Canary Islands. To be honest with you, I haven't fact-checked that info, I just heard it from someone so take it with a pinch of salt. It was someone that works for the NHS so they have some credibility I guess. The locals, understandably, are not too happy about this development. They're already struggling with economic hardships on the islands due to general global issues, including the reduction of tourism, so I can imagine they don't want to add an epidemic to their problems.
I'm trying by best not to give my attention to this virus, but I can't get away from it haha. I'm sorry of this post is the first you're hearing of it but, apparently, it's already in France and Switzerland. It so follows that it probably is already in England too ( in London at least).
I don't know when I'll be able to visit the Canary Islands again. I was there in 2025, just over a year ago now, and it was awesome still. Let's hope things get better everywhere; peace on earth and all that, so I can get back to travelling. I also was planning to visit the middle east this year, but that's not going to happen for sure. I also wish the people of the Canary Islands well. Tenerife, I believe, is the island that from which they were flown home. I've been to that particular airport and they'd have had to shut down tourism completely to achieve a proper quarantine (unless that wasn't their goal). Hope no outbreaks on that island π
Peace & Love,
AdeΜ
