This makes a lot of sense. When I travel, I usually get a travel eSIM first too, and then switch to a local SIM if I need a phone number.
One thing I learned the hard way is to download and install the eSIM profile before the trip, then activate it on arrival. That way, you don't have to deal with setup first thing upon landing, just make a few clicks to set the eSIM line.
As for Smart coverage, it works well in cities, but once you move around or head to smaller islands, gaps do happen. I’ve had trips where keeping an eSIM Philippines active on Globe served as a backup. I had 5G in Manila and Cebu, and it stayed usable when the main signal dropped.
Smart makes sense if you want a phone number, but for the first few days, having data ready as soon as you land definitely reduces stress.
