Most people who visit the Bahamas go to Nassau via a cruise or Paradise Island by way of Atlantis or one of the other hotels. The majority of visitors don't know that the Bahamas is made up of over 700 Island and 2000 Cays. If you want to get a glimpse of the real Bahamas visiting one of the other islands might be for you. I'll use the island of Eleuthera as an example. Having grown up in the Bahamas I have visited Eleuthera many times.
Here are some pictures from my past visits to Current, North Eleuthera:
Beach at Low Tide
Sunset Over the Water
Further north of Current you will find the northern coast line of Eleuthera. There are some sights worth seeing if you travel this way.
Looking Glass Bridge
In the above image of Looking Glass Bridge you can see where Hurricane Andrew moved the bridge over about 6 feet. This is why the bridge does not line up with the road. This bridge connects North Eleuthera to South Eleuthera. In South Eleuthera are the settlements of Governors Harbor and Rock Sound. Rock Sound is home to the Ocean Hole which is a body of salt water inland connected to the ocean under ground.
The Island of Harbor Island off the northern coast of Eleuthera is also worth visiting. You'll have to catch a ferry from North Eleuthera to get there but it's not a long trip.
Here are some pictures of Harbor Island.
Harbor Island also has a very nice pink sand beach. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any pictures of the beach. Using Google, a quick search will show you the pink sand beach I'm referring to.
There are other islands worth visiting in the Bahamas as well. The Exuma Cays have very nice beaches, some of which no one has set foot on in months. In the Exuma Cays you can also visit the swimming pigs. There's also very good fishing.
Long Island as a lot of character and sights to see. Two resorts in the north of Long Island are the Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort and the Stella Maris Resort Club. Sights worth mentioning are Dean's Blue Hole, The Columbus Monument and the Natural Pool.
I hope you've enjoyed this post. If you visit the Bahamas one day perhaps you'll be inspired to take the road less traveled to one of the many places most people don't get to see.
