About Jordaan
Jordaan is one of the legendary districts of Amsterdam. It spreads west of Centraal Station, the main railway station in Amsterdam. It covers the space around Canal Ring. This zone is precisely between Prinsengracht and Leidsegracht. Sometimes, it is identified as the area in which you can hear the bells of Westerkerk.
The name Jordaan is probably derived from a French word “jardin”, which means garden. Most of the Protestant French Huguenots lived in Jordaan, in the 17th century. They came as refugees from Catholic France. The resemblance to a garden isn't so obvious today, but you can certainly notice Dutch love for flowers and plants. All the windows, doors, benches and small private gardens are beautifully decorated.
When to visit Jordaan
If you want to understand the importance of this neighborhood, you should visit notable Jordaan Festival. It is organized every year in September, and it shows Dutch folk music and dances. This area is famous for its lively outdoor markets, some of the most popular ones in the country.
Why to visit Jordaan
Jordaan developed in the 17th century. It was known as a district of working people, who were oriented to the production which served the rich people of the Canal Ring. Most important Amsterdam's craftsmen, tradesmen and artists of the Golden Age lived here. Soon, it became notable for radical, left-wing politicians and for the occasional protests.
In 1970s much of the original architecture was reconstructed, and modern facilities were built, like today's popular playgrounds, or the Marnixbad swimming pool. However, this is still an attractive area, with narrow streets and interesting public monuments. You can see around 800 protected statues, memorials and buildings here. Furthermore, some of the most visited tourist attractions are located here, or in the vicinity, like Anne Frank Museum and Westerkerk.
