It's rainy today. It's not particularly cold, but the dampness does make one yearn for a hot cuppa and a warm blanket.
I don't mind the rain...I actually quite like it. We get a lot of tourists in the summer months and if it happens to rain, they just don't know what to do with themselves. Often I hear, 'oh, I feel bad for the people who've come here for their vacation and it's raining!'
Um, I don't.
I think it is from years of camping as a child and remembering that feeling of swimming all day long, until the sun went down and a little chill started to set in. With wet hair and shriveled fingers and toes, we change into our shorts and sweatshirts and sit by the fire, warming the chill out.
Our first visit to Iceland, I did a lot of research to be sure I was prepared for the weather. We bought rain coats and pants, as I read that it rained a lot. And it did...pretty much every day...but not consistently. And if you're in Iceland, you had better visit a couple of the beautiful waterfalls.
But, anyway, the rain today is reminding me of the most recent trip we took. On our last full day in the Myvatn region of Northern Iceland, it was pouring rain when we woke up. But we had decided we wanted to visit the Krafla caldera. We weren't going to let a little rain stop us.
This is Viti Maar (Crater of Hell), a volcanic crater.
It ended up being a day of very interesting scenery and a treacherous hike through slippery mud. But we (well, at least I) loved it.
And we got some amazing cloud action that night!
And a great sunset.
