Hej everyone,
I moved to Ireland one month ago and wanted to share my thoughts and experiences with you all.
So a few months back my girlfriend got a job in Ireland, she accepted it because I accepted a job on the island Hvar so after working during the summer there I moved to Ireland with her.
My motivation was the idea to earn money in Ireland to renovate my old apartment in Zagreb. The pay in Croatia is far smaller than the pay in Ireland, one of the reasons is the higher standard in this country and the other is that although Croatia is in the European Union we still didn’t convert our currency Kuna(HRK)to Euro(Eur). The Euro is around 7.5 times stronger than the Kuna so when converting Euro You can buying power increases when exchanging Your Euro into Kuna.
The first thing I noticed about the country when I arrived was the rain xD. Everyone warned me about it, but I don’t actually mind the rain and when staying indoors it calms me down and I love to hear the sound of it. They call Ireland the green jewel because the nature seems untouched. The grass is green, air clean and a lot of people have cows and horses and make their own products like cheese so its home grown and home made. We moved to Killarney in the western part of the country in the county Kerry. This place is not huge, in the 3-4 streets in the center you have everything you need and don’t have to leave the city to go to a bigger one. A national park right next to the center, an old castle, the highest mountain in Ireland is just next door, wild deer or stags as they call them here are running around you when you go for a jog.
The culture and the people are also great, everyone seems really friendly, ready to help and a habit I noticed is that they always say sorry, all the time, when you cross them in the street and the street looks like its getting tighter and you don’t actually bump into them, but during the walking it just seems that way they will say sorry and continue walking. Brilliant
One of their famous traits it that they love to drink, so far I haven’t met that many locals to notice that, but I notice that it is normal and accepted to drink all the time. They just love to have a good time and to hang out, very social and friendly people. The Irish don’t need a good reason to go out for a pint or to organize some event. Local music in a pub and after midnight switch to 80’s VS 90’s party no problem, Oktoberfest in middle of November, sure bring out the beer, every second door in the city is an entrance to a pub; of course, where else would you be?
The Irish love their beers and their whiskeys, so we became great friend very fast ;)
Their language is English but thein have a strong accent and for someone from a non-English speaking country who didn’t have much experience could have a problem understanding them. Ireland has many dialects which you can hear if you type them into YouTube, to me they all sound great. Ireland also has its own language that’s thought in schools to kids before they learn English. The language is called Gaelic and is supposedly very hard to learn. The road signs and street names, tourist boards, notes in bars and hotels are all written in both Gaelic and English to preserve the national culture and tradition of the Country.
I love this country so far so I decided to stay here for a few years for work and to travel and get to know this country, its people, the culture, they have a lot of castles I would like to visit, stunning nature like the cliffs of Moher, the cities like Dublin and Cork and all these smaller cities around Ireland.
This will also be a sort of a travel blog so You can stay tuned for some more posts from Ireland.
Thank You for the time to read my blog and hope You have a nice day and if you feel like You want to change Your life and move somewhere I think it’s a good idea to widen Your horizons and travel the world. After Ireland I’ll come back to Croatia, but after a while I might move somewhere else :D
