The first time I entered the orphanage I was so overwhelmed with joy....I thought all this time I was born and raised up in Nairobi and I have never being here.
Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage was founded in 1977. It's located near Nairobi National Park, an orphanage of elephant calves and rhinos from all over Kenya, which was founded and is still managed by Daphne Sheldrick, widow of Kenya best known game warden, David Sheldrick . It's a focal point of elephant conservation.
)
The elephants orphaned by poaching are brought here, others are from human-wildlife conflict. They receive treatment, personal care 24 hours a day from highly dedicated staff. Eventually the calves are moved to Tsavo, reintroduced into wild herds.
The orphanage is open from 11 am-12 pm. Calves are exercised, bathed and bottle-fed. visitors are free to watch.
Each elephant has a name, the names come from location of where and how they were rescued.
They operate a foster program which allow an individual across the world to support their project by fostering orphaned elephant,rhino.
