Previously, these calcareous kilns were used for calcining limestone in order to obtain quicklime. A cylinder vertically mounted on a foundation is a short-flame continuously operating shaft furnace. Limestone is mixed with fuel and laid on top through the top. Finished lime is discharged through openings in the lower part of the furnace.
In the upper part of the furnace shaft, moisture is evaporated and limestone is heated, the middle temperature develops and firing occurs, and below the calcined material cools down under the influence of external air that enters through the discharge openings
