My journey in Hokkaido begins after departing from Asahikawa to Sōunkyō. It is a two-hour bus ride from JR Asahikawa station, meandering slowly from downtown Asahikawa via the little towns and then slowly making its way into the mountains. Come autumn and you can enjoy Sōunkyō at its fullest when the leaves are yellow and red.
Meanwhile, another must-see attraction is the ropeway up to Mount Taisetsu. It is snow-capped starting from September and you can enjoy walking in the snow upon reaching the first station of the ropeway. Take extra caution if you wear normal footwear as it does get rather slippery in the snow!
After sunset, it's best to return to your nearby Ryokan (traditional Japanese style hotels) and call it a night. Dip into the therapeutic outdoor hot springs (rotenpuro) and enjoy the silence of the night.
Stay tuned for Part 3 as I make my way across the island of Hokkaido!
