This week we visited the impressive Pointe du hoc. This is between Omaha beach and Utah beach in Normandy. These are two of the beaches where the landing took place during the WWII. This was an important point to liberate because on this rock the beaches were secured by large cannons
This heavy and difficult mission was carried out by the Us Ranger battalion, led by lieutenant colonel James earl rudder. 225 soldiers would land on this beach there only mission was to destroy all guns, cannons.
On point du hoc heavy bombing took place days before the landing. with a result that germans had placed the guns more inland. It was like seven in the morning when the rangers reached the foot of the 30 meter high cliffs, which was defended by the germans from inside the bunkers. With the help of mortars, shot up with ropes and rope ladders, the men managed to climb up the cliffs.
It comes very close when you stand between the batteries and the big craters of mortals and cannon shots.
