Some information about the lake
Hi! I decided to write a series of posts about my trip to Lake Baikal. There is a lot of information, so putting everything in one post will be quite difficult) In this post I want to tell you the general information about Baikal.
What do you need to know if you are planning a trip to the lake?
Lake Baikal is located in the center of the Asian continent at the border of the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Buryatia in the Russian Federation. The lake stretches from the north-east to the south-west at 640 km in the form of a giant crescent. The width of the Baikal ranges from 24 to 79 km. The bottom of Lake Baikal is 1167 meters below the level of the World Ocean, and the mirror of its waters is 455.5 meters higher.
The area of the Baikal water surface is 31 722 km ² (excluding islands), which is roughly equal to the area of such countries as Belgium or the Netherlands. According to the area of the water mirror, Lake Baikal occupies the sixth place among the largest lakes in the world and is the deepest on the Earth.
The length of the coastline is 2100 km.
Because of the large size of the lake, you can plan many travel options there. You can think of a route along the mainland coast or visit the island of Olkhon.
