Writing about major attractions like the Colosseum is not always easy in our opinion. It is easy to get trapped in riddling up basics like its size, when it was build or how many entrances there are. But you can read this in any other blog or history book. Instead of doing this, we are going to give you some facts about the Colosseum that are less mentioned.
💥 When the Colosseum was opened by Emperor Titus it was celebrated with gladiator games that lasted 100 days in a row and there were over 3000 fights during these days.
💥 Back in the day it was originally known as the Amphitheatrum Flavium and this name is still present on the outside of the Colosseum today. Later on it was just named the Colosseum, referring to any large amphitheater for sports and entertainment.
💥 The southern side of the Colosseum collapsed in a massive earthquake in 847.
💥 The exit on the west side was called the Gate of Death because this was the exit where they brought the dead gladiators out.
💥 St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City is constructed with pieces of the marble facade and some other parts of the Colosseum.
💥 From the year 1643 on there is a catalog which mentions all the flowers found in the Colosseum since then. There are over 337 different species mentioned.
💥 The Colosseum is printed on Italy’s five cent Euro coin.
💥 There is a story about a naval battle that took place inside the Colosseum by filling up all the lower cells below the wooden floor. During this naval battle they had a massive battle between many ships that were brought in the Colosseum. It is all a bit sketchy, but there are strangers things that happened back then.
💥 Nowadays the Colosseum is pretty much in the middle of the centre of Rome, but in ancient times, the Colosseum would have actually been located on the outskirts of the city.
