Most noticeable among the other sea urchins is the Red Pencil Urchin. It is abundant in Hawaii. This tiny one was in a tidepool in South Kona. The Red Pencil Urchin can grow to about 3 inches in diameter with spines as long as 4 inches. It is normally red but there are brown and purple too.
