You may have heard of Chernobyl and the nuclear disaster back in 1986, in Ukrain. They where going to test a new safety system at reactor 4, and the whole Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. Today you can visit the area, wich is said to be the most contaminated place on earth. I went there in March this year, and I want to share some pictures from my trip with the Steemit community.
I went on a two day trip and visited Chernobyl, the powerplant and Pripyat. You need a guide to go inside these places. We went with a group of 16 people. It was very interesting and strange to walk around in the abandoned villages, and walk inside the empty houses and buildings.
A lot of stuff is shattered all over the place, but most of the radioactive material is buried under the ground. I felt very safe walking around, and we also got our own geiger counter. We used it to measure the radiation level, and at the end of our tour, we got to see how much radiation we were exposed of.
We got to walk inside many buildings. I could see that Pripyat was a beautiful city before the accident. Many of the buildings have colorful art made of glass:
On some buildings the outside is decorated with mosaic
People may recognice the pool and the ferris wheel below, from the computer game Call of Duty 4.
The snow covered some of the bumper cars in the amusement park. Sadly no children had the opportunity to enjoy this park, it was suppose to open just five days after the accident.
When we walked around, a lot of cute dogs accompanied us. They made the empty ruins look a bit more friendly:
Some pictures of one of the schools:
I was shocked to learn that so many people worked so hard and even gave their life to prevent the power plant from exploding a second time. The second explosion whould have been devastating for all of Europe. A lot of work has been put down to clean up the area and cover up the whole power plant.

I`m grateful that I have had the chance to visit this strange place with such a sad story. The good thing is that a lot of wild animals now are taking over, and living in the area.
Thank you for reading my post about this adventure to a lost world.
With love
