Ready for this super fun city in “my cities” post here we go!
Why Singapore?
Because this little country has a lot to offer and is very conveniently located for when you are on a Asia trip. I was able to be in Singapore for 5 days when I was crossing Asia after I graduated 8 years ago and really enjoyed y time there, so that why this place made it to the list.
First Impression
As mentioned I visited when I was traveling Asia, my trip started in Hong Kong and went through China, Thailand and Malaysia and had a stop in Singapore.
I took the bus from Melaka to Singapore, my first impression?
Asia has a lot of character and culture but what I noticed is that Singapore compared to other countries in the region is more “western” . It’s very clean and organized and everybody speaks English therefore it’s very easy to navigate. By Western I also mean that Singapore is expensive to live in compared to the other countries that were part of my trip.
Highlights
When you visit make sure to spend time and see the following highlights:
CBD
Maybe a little cliché but the CBC (Central Business District) is a great area to take your pictures and enjoy the city. In the CBD you will find two highlights the Merlion statue and the Marina bay sands.
You will find Merlion on most postcard you will send your family when you visit Singapore this half fish half lion is a very well-known statue and almost a must see when you ae there.
Marina Bay Sands is a hotel with casino with a great view of the city. The complex costs 8 billion so don’t expect to win much in the casino. The roof top pool of the hotel is also available for people not staying in the hotel.
Sentosa
One of the biggest island of Singapore, there is more than 2 kilometers of beach waiting for you! It’s a great daytrip away from the main island, there are golf courses, hotels and bikes waiting to enjoy.
Orchard Road
If you don’t like shopping or by around other tourist this is not for you. But there is so much shopping waiting for you with all respected brands having their stores there. To me I did not really like it there and won’t spend too much time there, especially when you are backpacking you don’t have the money for it or the luggage space to bring everything.
In general I only used this street to visit on of the many food court within the shopping malls to have relatively good food.
Clarke Quay
Enjoy walking around in the city along the river and have all the restaurant and nightlife just there, a must go to meet fellow travelers and locals and just have a fun night out. For Asian standards Singapore is expensive so if you don’t want to spend the money go out in different Asian countries.
Little India
Singapore is really organized and clean, Little India offers you more sounds, smells and liveliness. So if you want explore a more urban vibe with markets and great food little India is your place. When I was in Singapore I stayed in this neighborhood and it did not disappoint.
The Downside
For Asian standards Singapore is expensive so if you want to expend your travels for as long as you can this country is not your best pick. If you want a break from the real Asia vibe and feel more at home then Singapore is a great organized country to relax for a while.
