Phnom Kulen is not an Angkor temple, rather the seat of all the overs. This is one mountain in a range or rather a chain of mountains. It is formed of sandstone and it was from here that all the sandstone was quarried for Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and all the other temples across the region. So it is not an overstatement to say that without Phnom Kulen there would be no Angkor; This is a very important attraction and one of the truly great things to see in the region.
This chain of small mountain plateaux is just to the south of, and forms the foothills of, the larger Dangrek Mountains. The Kulen hills average about 400m (1300ft) in height along the length of the range. The entire site holds huge religious importance to the local people, and this is one of the most revered landmark sites in Cambodia.
The symbolic importance of Phnom Kulen for Cambodians stems from the fact that this is the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. In the early 9th century King Jayavarma II proclaimed independence from Java at this very site. It is here, of course, that Kbal Spean is located, adding to the myth and cultural importance of the area. Also here is Preah Ang Thom, a Buddhist monastery built in the 16th-century and famous for its giant reclining Buddha, the largest in the whole of Cambodia.
The mountains and the surrounding area form the Phnom Kulen National Park, which straddles the Svay Len and Va Rin Districts. It was created to provide recreational areas and an environment of scientific research. This will hopefully preserve natural scenic features like Phnom Kulen Mountain itself, and the surrounding famous waterfalls. The park is located about 48 km (26miles) to the north of the beautiful provincial city of Siem Reap.
UNESCO added the site to their World Heritage Tentative List on Sept. 1 1992 in the Cultural category.
This is one of the best things to see in Cambodia. It is an absolute delight to ride out here and spend time taking in the surroundings. The cultural history is never far away, but the scenic beauty is ever present.
Top Tips for enjoying Phnom Kulen
If there are more than a couple in your party, talk to the local taxi drivers and book an excursion. It is much better to come here in a cab and enjoy the site at your leisure rather than being shepherded about on a Cambodian tour bus.
