I still remember when I was at my office and I received a message from my friends inviting us (my brother, sister, husband, and me) to La Tortuga Island, we accepted immediately and made the transfer for the reservation.
We left Caracas a Friday night with a group of friends and stayed in a Hotel in Higuerote, since we had to be at 6:00 AM at the dock to take the boat. La Tortuga Island is located in south of the Caribbean Sea, 85 Km from Higuerote, Venezuela. The name of the island derives from the numerous sea turtles that arrive annually to spawn in the beautiful beaches.
After we sailed from Higuerote I never imagined what I was going to live; once we were in high sea the waves were huge and the tide high, like if the sea was angry. The boat was bouncing hard every minute, all the girls screaming, I was sitting next to my sister and took her hand strongly.
In order to calm the nerves and relax a bit we started drinking alcohol. I was filling dizzy and I was a little scared; the last thing I wanted was the boat capsize in a heavy sea. After long 3 hours, suddenly the boat began to slow down. One of the engines got damaged because of the strong impacts with the water, I think.
Nerves, uncertainty, and despair invaded all of us who were in the boat. We were about 10 people. Laughter on the outside and worries inside, as we tried to hide the bad time we were going through. Waves were getting bigger, without exaggerating they were more than 3 or 4 meters high.
After spending 7 hours in this slow agony, when normally are 4 hours, we saw in the distance a turquoise sea never seen before, crystal clear water, a bright white sand. Yes, we had finally reached Paradise. We jumped from the boat immediately desperate to enjoy this wonderful beach. Once there we completely forgot the recent crossing and we really began to enjoy; We went to the camp, where it was waiting for us an exquisite lunch: fresh fish, tostones and salad.
Two days and one night enjoying this virgin paradise.
In conclusion, it was a risky adventure but it was totally worth it!
I hope you enjoyed my story.
Hugs,
