Last year, I visited one of the most extreme prisons. It was a very interesting and I learned a lot about the history of the prison with the audio guided tour.
If you are in the San Francisco area, I recommend you to take the boat trip to Alcatraz prison. You won't regret it.
Alcatraz, formerly known as the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum high-security federal prison, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) off the coast of San Francisco, California. It was in operation from August 11, 1934 until March 21, 1963. The island also held a lighthouse and a military fortification.
Famous criminals that were held at Alcatraz: Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. "Doc" Barker, and Alvin "Creepy" Karpis.
36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts during the 29 years of the prison's existence.
The three-story cellhouse is composed of the A-block, B-block, C-block, and D-block, the warden's office, visitation room, the library, and the barber shop. The dining hall, the kitchen, and the hospital were in the main building. Corridors of the prison were named after major American streets such as Broadway and Michigan Avenue.
Today the penitentiary is a museum and attract more than 1.5 million visitors annually.
