In Goms, which lies in the Valais region of Switzerland, you can explore one of Europe's most peculiar architectural details. Houses and barns were built on stilts with stone slabs making it impossible for mice and other vermin to enter.
Some of these structures were built in the early 1600's and are still being used to this day! Wowzer!

Here you can see the detail showing the granite slab sitting on top of the stilt.
Did you notice the "dovetail" joint which locks the stilt into the beam below and gives it great lateral stability!
This particular structure dates from 1616 and can be found directly on the main road.
It is amazing to see these old wooden structures still being used and beautified. They form a great cultural heritage!
Wood as both a construction material and a fuel are still of great importance in this area!
Old meets new as a drain pipe now passes through this centuries old stone slab!
