Myeong-dong Cathedral in the Archdiocese of Seoul is the first Cathedral Church and a symbol of the Catholic Church in Korea. It is the first place where the Korean Church Faith Community was born and where the remains of several martyrs were buried.
The Korean Catholic Church began with the first faith community after Lee Seung-hoon returned to Korea after being baptized in Beijing in 1784. In the autumn of that year, Kim Bum Woo, an interpreter who lived in the famuos room called Myeong-Nae-Bang, became a member of the Catholic Church under their influence and opened the Catholic etiquette and doctrine classes in his house.
Below is the photo of Myeong-Nae-Bang exhibited in Myeong-dong Cathedral.
The design and construction supervision of the church was undertaken by the Father Coste, and during the dedication of the bishop of Mithel on the anniversary of the Holy Spirit in May 1898, he received the remains of a martyr who sustained faith in persecution.
