It's always nice to be able to get away from the hectic city life. My husband and I decided to take a road trip to Shelter Island which is a town and an island situated at the eastern end of Long Island, NY. Shelter Island is accessible only by ferry. It is a quick eight minute ride.
We didn't have any specific plans and since it was our first time here, we decided to do a quick drive around the island. We saw a few beaches and we also drove past a preserve where you can hike through trails. Since we were not prepared for hiking we decided we would park the car and explore the town. While we were walking, we noticed that the streets had no sidewalks!
I guess you don't really need them when there are not that many cars on the road. This town is super charming and low key. During our exploration we came across a sign that said fresh oysters for sale. Since my husband is a huge fan of oysters we decided to go in and check it out. Where else could you find a business operated out of a home garage?
We decided to buy a dozen oysters and we walked across the street to the local brewery. It was a no frills local hang out. We ordered a Belgian style beer made with local Acacia honey and lemon verbena grown from the owner's garden.
Nothing better than fresh oysters and an icy beer for a light snack. Shelter Island is super charming and it has a small town vibe. It's fun to spend a day here unwinding and taking in the beautiful scenery. Ah, pure bliss!
