Many people think of John Steinbeck when they imagine Monterey.
Steinbeck actually lived in Salinas and Pacific Grove (Monterey itself only very briefly) but he immortalized the city through his novels Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat and East of Eden.
It should be apparent to all that Monterey is very scenic. Situated along the coast 118 miles south of San Francisco, Monterey boasts a rather impressive turquoise blue water, plenty of seafood joints and an immensely popular aquarium.

Thinking of packing up and moving here? There might be one obstacle; the fact that the median home value in Monterey is $736,900, up 9.1% compared to a year ago.
It should come at no surprise that a city along the Pacific Ocean with a history of literary significance would cost an arm and a leg to live in.
One Day
