One year ago I booked a last minute trip to the island of Terceira... and by last minute I mean I booked it one afternoon and left that evening on a 33 hour journey to where my father was born.
I decided to go last minute because my aunt, uncle and cousins were headed there and I got serious FOMO.
The tiny town I am originally from in Northern CA has a large Portuguese community of people who are from the Azores islands... but now that I think of it, I am not sure why we don't call ourselves Azorean. I guess that's a question I will have for my Mom when I see her next week! During the summer there are many people that head back to the islands to visit for long periods of time that last up to 3 months. All this time, I just didn't get it. What makes someone want to spend so much time there?
Now I get it, and for so many reasons. The beauty, culture, pace, fresh seafood, bread, scenery. I want to go back just thinking about it all!
I find it fascinating that many people have not heard of the Azores islands, and I get excited every opportunity I get to tell them about this hidden gem that's full of adventure!
Take the time to research about all the islands and what they have to offer. One of my bucket list items is to visit all 9 islands!
