Recently we loaded up the camper and headed for the second biggest lake in the Southern Hemisphere! Lake Taupo!! This lake is massive at 616 square kilometres (238 sq mi).
There are plenty of places to stay around the great lake and most of them are free if you have a confined space permit =).
On a clear day you can see the surrounding Mountains, the biggest being Mount Ruapehu which is one of the major ski fields in the North Island of New Zealand.
Most mornings we would come to this awesome little spot right on the lake to try our luck trout fishing and do a little yoga on the roof!
After yoga/fishing/breakfast we took the bikes for a ride along the lake to check out some new places. The bike tracks in New Zealand are pretty epic. Nearby are some of the longest suspension bridges in NZ that are accessible by bike on the full or half day rides.
We returned to the camper and decided to head for the most visited attraction in New Zealand.. Huka Falls!
You can hear Huka Falls long before you see it... Water flows over the falls at a rate of 220,000 litres per second!! Apparently that fills an olympic swimming pool in 11 seconds.
The amount of water moving is pretty crazy making you feel very small when standing on the bridge above. No drones are allowed at Huka Falls probably due to Helicopters in the area =(.
If you find yourself in Taupo or near Lake Taupo here are a few Must do's!!
Huka Falls
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Great Lake Mountain Bike Trail
Skydiving
Trout Fishing
Hope everyone is having a great start to 2018 =). Get out there and explore. Let me know some attractions or lakes in your area! We are looking for some new travel destinations this year!
