Cozumel is about scuba diving.
Some of the best scuba in the Northern Hemisphere of the planet...
Also for me, the little island of Cozumel is much more serene and relaxing for a vacation, than Cancun across the water, a ferry ride away.
We dived at a place called “Punta Sur” and it was an 80ft dive, which is very deep for amateurs, thus we could only stay down there 5 minutes.. and we also decompressed at 20 ft for 1 minute on the way up.
We actually followed the dive master through coral tunnels ; the only time I ever attempted something like that!
Not touching the coral is very important, so he was showing me to dive with my hands crossed in front of me, controlling swimming only with my body and feet.
I like the idea of using airbnb and rent from a local property owner, if you don't know the market and want a smart place to stay. Or look at reviews for local hotels and contact them directly. Book flights with airlines, do it all yourself, and you will have a great time! ;-)
Reputable vacation-rental sites are: HomeAway, FlipKey, or Airbnb, all of which will protect your money from fraudsters.
Cozumel has the best diving toward the southwest of the island. I would recommend Cozumel if you want to see the most colorful coral reefs.
