On the west shore of Back Bay and the south bank of Jackfish Creek, swathed in sunlight and shadows is the old Back Bay cemetery. As you walk through the cemetery you will find worn head stones, white washed picket fences and aging small wooden crosses.
These memorials are surrounded by trees, glistening water and rocky hills. It is a peaceful place to have been laid to rest.
There are about 35 graves dating back to the 1940's and it is not a well known spot. Could be the mosquitoes that play a roll in keeping people away, you need a bit of grit to pass through the massive swarms to get here. The occasional wolverine and wild rabbit makes the hike in pretty special however.
The land will eventually swallow what is left of this place and perhaps that is the way it should be.
In the winter this lake freezes solid and becomes a popular location for snowmobiles. This warning sign tells people to avoid the cemetery.
Here are some Juniper berries. They are traditionally used to “detoxify” the body and promote healthy digestion and skin health, among many other things. I always have a pocket full when I go on hikes. source

And the local terrain. Yellowknife is surrounded by and built upon ancient Precambrian rock.
