When I first saw this statue, I thought it was Szent Istvan (King Stephen), the First King of Hungary, as statues of him are everywhere, all around Hungary, and this figure looks almost like him (as in statues).
This statue is of Simon Bojothy and he was pretty big deal in his time.
When Mongolians invaded Hungary (1221-1241), the King reigning at that time, King Bela IV, instructed Simon Bojothy to defend a castle in Esztergom (not far from Bajot, where this statue is located) - which was the capital city of Hungary at that time, although the Mongols didn't find success, the capital city was moved to Budapest, to this date.
The statue was donated to the village of Bajot, by the school and local government.
