Sea turtles are so awesome! Scuba diving next to these super chill and graceful reptiles is always a blissful experience.
The island of Bunaken, Indonesia easily has some of the best scuba diving in the world. Bunaken National Park is located around this tiny island just off the coast of the city Manado on the northern tip of Sulawesi.
Bunaken island is a giant cinder cone rising up from a sea floor several thousand feet below. This unique shape leads itself to some of the best and fastest wall drift diving on the planet. The sea life loves these currents; Bunaken boasts some of the highest biodiversity in the Coral Sea. Flying through massive schools of fish while dangling over the abyss is a daily occurrence on these dive sites.
For the sea turtles, Bunaken's massive overhanging walls are covered in delicious sponges. Masters of the current, turtles can effortless glide against the rip while nibbling on a sponge... all which we scuba divers struggle to hold position.
Did you know that sea turtles can sleep for 4-7 hours on a single breath of air? Or that sea turtles can lower their heart rate below 10 beats per minute while resting? Or that sea turtles can live to be 80 years old (sorry Crush, it's not 150).
