In some parts of the world they just don't have adequate plumbing and apparently funky smells can get backed up in the draining pipes. During the Full Moon Party in Koh Phagnan Thailand last month it was very hard to find a decent room at a good price. However I did find a very good room in a central location including hot water, AC, flat screen TV for 12 dollars a night!
The only problem was the fowl smell permeating from the bathroom. Being "Travel Pro" and coming across this issue before I knew exactly what was the cause and how to resolve it. The stench was permeating from the drain on the bathroom floor.
Often in the third world the entire bathroom is treated like a shower, with one drain in the bathroom floor. So I took one look at that drain; went down stairs where they had free coffee and paper cups to go with it, and just covered that drain with the cup.
This reduced the smell by about 90%. Along with keeping the bathroom door closed I was 100% good to go. A better solution is filling a balloon with water and letting it sit over the drain. That creates a nice seal and will eliminate the smell entirely.
These issues are common all around lesser developed countries. Coincidentally in Quito Ecuador I had to do the same thing just last week. Good room, good price, but stinky drain. Some times when you're roughing it in the third world, a little "Travel Pro" knowledge can turn a lousy situation into not a situation at all! Until next time - Dan "World Travel Pro!
