Taking advantage of a sick day and stormy weather
The winding, cavernous, textured beauty of Vernazza
The Cinque Terre is in an area of northern Italy where 5 old medieval towns cling to the steep cliffs on the Mediterranean, not far from the French border. We got there by train from Switzerland and found ourselves fighting off colds. In addition to that, the sea was quite turbulent. As a result, there were no boats operating between the villages. We checked into our room and walked down through the tiny village to the harbor, where people were watching the terrific waves crashing onto the jetty, throwing spray into the sky. It is a fantastic place to watch the sunset, which we did. Once the sun sank below the horizon, someone clapped. Haha I’m sure the sun appreciated it.
Next day we were definitely under the weather with our colds, and it was raining too, making the trails very slippery. So we took a day off and laid low. Fortunately our apartment had a partially covered deck and kitchen, so after a trip to the small grocery, we were in good shape.
Wanting to draw, I drew what I could see from out the windows, but then decided to create a composite image from Vernazza from memory, as a way to get a general feeling for the place. This I drew in my sketchbook using a fine point black pen. Once back home in Seattle, I scanned the drawing and recreated it in my computer vector program. With that I applied a color palette to it, which is what is presented here.
I’ve added a picture of the ink drawing from my sketchbook here as well. I didn’t draw it with the intention to make a color version of it. Only later did I choose it to render in vector.
What do you think? Did I explain it well enough? Do you have any questions?
